The annual meeting of the Chalmers Licensing Committee was held at Port Chalmers on Friday, and was attended by Messrs H. Y. Widdowson, S.M. (chairman), D. M. Mawson, R. Ferrier, J. Dicker, and G. L. After a permanent transfer of the license of the Portobello Hotel from Mr R. J. Watts to James M'Cluskey had been granted the chairman announced that the district health authorities had inspected the hotels, and had reports on matters not mentioned in the police report. The police report stated that all the hotels in the district had been well conducted. Several small matters had been reported on in all the hotels except the Shiel Hill Hotel, the license of which would be granted without further delay. In respect to the health report, the committee had visited one of the Port Chalmers hotels that morning, and found that the matters mentioned’in the report did exist. Therefore the committee hod decided to postpone for a fortnight the granting of all the other licenses in the district, in order that the committee might have time to go round and inspect the hotels. ’The remaining applications were adjourned accordingly.
