The foundation stone of the now Anglican Cathedral, Dunedin, was laid on Tuesday by the Primate, Bishop Ncvill, in the presence of a large assemblage. Two Chinese members of the crow of the Berwick Law wore each fined £2O and Costs at the Dunedin Police Court last week for smuggling opium. Mr Kurtzel, a German, who has boon residing near Temuka for the past four years, has been removed to Spumes Island, where he will bo interned. The Defence Minister recently received a communication from a military pensioner who served in the Maori war and holds the Now Zealand War Medal, asking that the £36 a year ho receives be devoted to the patriotic funds, and enclosing a cheque for £42, the amount he has received so far. It has been found .that the law is defective with regard to those invalided home when the illness has been contracted ■ in camp or in transports, no provision being made for assistance by the State. It is proposed to remedy the defect when Parliament meets. The finances of the Patients and Prisoners’ Aid Society have been benefited to the extent of £SO from the estate of the late Mrs Ellen Foster and by £7 2s 3d from the estate of the late Joseph Wood. Mr W. L. Logie has been appointed secretary in place of Mr W. D. Stewart, resigned. The Hon. Sir Joshua. S. Williams has been elected patron of the society.
