THE GENERAL ELECTION

Mr J. Fohlen, having retired, Mr Ralph Sitewart, formerly inspector of schools in the Auckland district, has been selected as Liberal candidate for the Tauranga seat. Mr W. J. Moffatt will be a candidate for the Nelson seat at the forthcoming election. Mr T. A. H. Field is the Government nominee for the seat. Mr E. H. Crabb has been selected to contest the Palmerston North seat in the interests of the Liberal party. Mr Michel will be the Reform candidate for the Grey seat against Mr Webb the representative of the Social Democratic larty. It is understood (our Wellington correspondent states) that the Liberals will not run a candidate, but will give Mr Webb all the support they can; nevertheless the chances of the Reform Party winning the seat are very bright. Phe Liberals of the Patea electorate have been much concerned (telegraphs our New Plymouth correspondent) in choosing a man who might put up even a respectable fight against Mr G. V. Pearce. Mr P O’Dea was badly beaten last time, and he will not face tire music again Mr Christensen (chairman of the Harbour Board) was' the chosen one, but it is understood that he has cabled from England his refusal to contest the seat. A conference of delegates from surrounding branches is to be held at Patea on Monday. The Hawera branch has unanimously decided to support the nomination of Mr W. Morrison, of Maxwelltown The entry of Mr H. L. Michel as the Reform nominee in the contest for the Grey seat (telegraphs our Grcymouth correspondent) means that there will now be three candidates, th" other two bcimr tt- pfitin'r member (Mr P. 0. Webb) and Mr E. J. Scantlebury, who has been prominently identified with the public life of Reefton for the past 25 years and who dependent. The assumption that the Liberal Party will not • nominate a candidate is, I hear, erroneous. That party is merely playing “ a' waiting game.”
