APPOINTMENTS TO VACANT CHAIRS. A meeting of the Presbyterian Church Board of Property was held on the 18th for the purpose of considering the applications for the position of Professor of Natural Philosophy in the Universty of Otago, rendered vacant through the resignation of Dr Shand, and for the position of Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy, rendered vacant by the resignation of Dr Salmond. There were 26 applications for the Chair of Natural Philosophy, and the board decided that Dr Jack, at present lecturer on Physics in Belfast University, should be recommended for appointment. For the Chair of Mental and Moral Philosophy theie were 10 applications. The board agreed to recommend Dr Frank W. Dunlop, of Sydney, for appointment. Dr Dunlop is the son of the late Dr J. Dunlop, who held the position for many years of professor in the Theological Hall of the Presbyterian Church in Dunedin. Ho received his early training in Otago, and graduated B.A. in the University of Otago in 1893 and M.A. in the following year. Subsequently be studied in Germany Upon his return to New Zealand from Europe Dr Frank Dunlop was called to

the pastorate of Knox Presbyterian Church, Invercargill, from which church he was called to his present charge in NewSouth Wales. The recommendations in each case will be forwarded to the synod of the Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland for itg concurrence.
