PROHIBITED IMMIGRANT.

A PECULIAR CASE

INVERCARGILL, August 30,

Tiro native Esini, otherwise Matepa, who was brought to Bluff by the AngloNorman- from Malden Island, where he is alleged to have muxdered another native, was before Mr Cruickshauk, S.M., at the Police Court on Saturday, the charge being that lie was a prohibited immigrant. About a fortnight ago the accused was before the court in connection with the same charge, and he was then remanded, as doubt was entertained as to whether the accused came within the definition of a prohibited immigrant, be being a native of the Cook Island dependency of Now Zealand. In the meantime Inspector Norwood explained the position, and this ,was to the effect that Esini came within the Prohibited Immigrant Act. The Magistrate said that as the man had been taken off the boat by the jiolice the charge would hardly arise. Under the circumstances it would be better to place accused on board the boat again, and if ho came ashore he could be rearrested later. This was done, and the man was re•rreated and remanded till Wednesday next.
