TRADE DEPRESSION

BERLIN, August 19.

The trade depression is growing worse throughout Germany, and the increase in unemployment is daily becoming more serious. The position is accentuated by the heavy prices asked for foodstuffs. The shortage of gold is assuming a serious aspect. The Government is increasing its reserves in readiness for a possible war or an economic crisis, and it has instructed its departments to retain all the gold and pay out with paper money.
