EXPLOSION OF GAS.
SENSATIONAL EXPERIENCE. PALMERSTON NORTH, August 5. A sensational explosion occurred this morning at the storehouse of the railway gasworks. The gas engineer James Gat-,, field, had entered the shed when a loud detonation occurred. He was blown out of the doorway, and was rather badly burned on the arm, his face also being scorched. The store, containing six cylinders of gas, burst into flames, and 15,000 cubic feet of gas were consumed, leaving the cylinders empty. Some people feared that the reservoirs would burst, but thin was impossible, as they arc provided with safety valves. The lire brigade worked steadily in face of great odds, and succeeded in confining the outbreak to the building in which it occurred. Mr Gatfield was removed to his homo, where ho is progressing as well as can be expected. Several minor explosions occurred after the first, but no damage resulted from them. The shed was gutted, but the machinery is practically intact. The telegraph, telephone, and tablet wires werh destroyed by the boat, but have now been restored, and trains are ruruiing as usual
