But the day was much enjoyed by all. and in that term is included almost cveiybody who is anybody. The “korero" of the Savages was crowded, as their annual “ladies’ night" always is, for the annual is a thing to remember and dream over. The decorations were of great assistance to the beautiful evening gowns; the programmes were unique—brown paper lied with flax ; and supper was handed round at the proper time by the “Savages” in great form. His Excellency tho Governor was there with Lady Liverpool, and the Government House party; the Prime Minister, also, and his ladies; the Ministers in town and their wives, tho Mayor and Mayoress, the officers of the staff and their ladies, a vast number of guests—in short, the whole world and his wife. It was a brilliant and amusing function, and likewise most enjoyable. The Viceregal party was received by the secretary and Mrs Dykes. Mr and Mrs T. Wilford, and Mr and Mrs Newton, and during an interval Dr A. K. Newman made a very bright and remarkable speech, adding to the gaiety of the proceedings. The Governor and Lady Liverpool showed the politeness of kings, which is punctuality; and Mr Massey, who was also on board, made a very pleasant speech of appreciation and hopefulness.
