ASHBURTON WINTER SHOW.

ASHBUBTON, June 15. The ninth combined Winter Show under the auspices of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Ashburton'Poultry Society was opened yesterday. In declaring the show open, the Hon. T. Buxton dwelt on the progress of dairying and of land settlement under the beneficent policy inaugurated and carried out by the Liberal Governments. He quoted figures in support of hi* contention, but these had all been given out previously. He specially lauded the Land Settlement Financ* Act, under which 14 associations, representing 92 persons, and 15,372 acres of land, had been

procured last year, bringing the total to data since- the passing, of the act to 25 associations, • 160 peisons, and 24,526 acres.

Mr A. J. Keith had some excellent animals among the fat cattle, and repealed his Dunedin successes. The display o! sheep was good, and competition on tha whole keen. In» the class for ljt'jifc wethers, Messrs M'Clelland Brothers 'won well with three beautiful Southdown*. These animals were a picture; even, symmetrical, nicely-fleshed, and low on tha ground. The same breeders won in another wether class for heavy-weights with a pen of Down cross sheep. The light-weight fat hogget prize. went to Mr T. J. Kermeen, with no competition, and the heavies went to Mr J Glassey, both showing long-wool cross wethers. Messrs M'Clelland Brothers won in a good class for butchers' cheep. Th« foals shown were somewhat disappointing. The prizes went to Messrs W. 6roy, F. W. Bishop, and G. W. Body. Probably the outstanding feature of the produce division was the very excellent show of roots, which were a splendid lot, hard to surpass. The grain and garden produce sections were also good, the work done by the ladies in the cookery division was first-rate, and technical and artistio work by the echool children attracted considerable attention.
