WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waihemo Countv Council was held on Saturday, there being" present—the chairman (Mr H. O'Neill), and Crs J. Ross, J. O'Connell, T. Rendall, R. Cameron, H. G. Bayley, A. M'Lennan, G. Clark, and T. H. Pilbrow. DEPUTATIONS. Messrs Wison . and Gilford waited upon the council to ask*for an exchange of road from Wilcox's crossing to Gilford's. The deputation stated that by acceding to its request the council would be saved the upkeep of the level crossing, and the road would be a better one, requiring very little formation. ■ '• After a little discussion it was decided to accede to the request, on condition that the council was successful in getting a halfohain road put through. COBBESPONDSXCE. "William A. Wright wroto requesting that two loads of gravel be put at the entrance to his property.— Request granted. The clerk Muhiototo County Council wrote expressing his council's willingness to assist the Waihemo Council in its efforts to have a bridge constructed over the Taieri River at Rock and Pillar.—Received. The secretary Otago Hospital and Chariable Aid Board wrote stating the levy on the council for the year to be £467 8s 6d.— As this was a reduction of some £6O on last year's levy, the notification was read ■with satisfaction, the Chairman remarking that the conference had evidently done some good. The Clerk, Maniototo County Council, wrote forwarding a copy of resolutions passed at last meeting of his council, urging the Hon. the Postmaster-general to reconsider his decision in refusing to sanction a telephone line through Central Otago to Dunedin, and asking for the Waihemo Council's support in the matter.—Received. Thornhill Cooper, jun., wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the railway crossings ° n fc he Palmerston-Dunback road. At two of them the rails, crossing the road at an angle, projected above the road, and anyone crossing with a vehicle was likely to break a wheel or an axle.—lt was decided to call the attention of the railway officers to the matter with a view to having the crossing gravelled. The Clerk of the Stratford County Council wrote, forwarding copy of following resolution passed at a meeting of his council: —'-That this council learn s with regret that county councils which\ have already received a total of £SOOO from the Government under the State Guaranteed Advances Act will.not be advanced any more at present for the construction of roads, and thinks it a wrong policy for any Government in a young country to check councils from developing their districts by refusing loans for bridges, roads, etc. —Received. engineer's report

The Engineer reported as follows on the works in progress in the county during the month:—

" Blue Mountain Riding.—The footbridge to M'Lew's Crossing has been reinstated. The concrete work in connection with the protective works at Kennedy's Creek is now completed, and should afford a very reasonable measure of protection. Two large culverts have been constructed orr the Main Dunback road, Australian hardwood being used. —Meadowbank: The contract for bridle track to Taieri Peak road let at last meeting will be undertaken early next week, and should be completed by next sitting. Culverts on Taieri Peak road have been cleaned out and repaired where necessary. —Bushey: The contract for the 6iipply and delivery of 300 yards of gravel to the county boundary has Boon satisfactorily completed, and has been taken over by the council, as also has the contract for the supply and delivery of 150 yards gravel to Sutton's residence. During the coming month several culverts in this riding will require to be reconstructed. All gravel has been raked in, and the main bridges have received attention. —Goodwood : The contract for the Supply and delivery of gravel to Chisholm's residence is well in hand, and should be finished during next week. Much important work has been carried out in re-forming the old metal road through Geodwood Bush; a length of 110 chains has been re-formed, and all coarse metal has been knapped. During next month several culverts will have to be reconstructed, and the drain at Geodwood corner extended to a width of 30ft, using ironbark timber.— Green Valley: All creeks and culverts have received attention throughout, and watertables on the Main road have been cleaned out.—Macraes: Contract No. 4, formation to Stag embankment and metal to Main Hyde road, is well in hand. The Stag embankment should be completed by the time of the meeting, and the metalling early next month. Contract No. 25, supply and delivery of metal to Moonlight road, has been commenced, and about 70 cubic yards of metal is now knapped and. ready to be delivered on the road. An entrance has been made to the Coronation Hall, using 6inch concrete pipes, and imi>ortnnt mantenanoe work has been carried out on the Toads." —The report was adopted. GENERAL. The followirrn tenders were accepted:— Contract No. 18 formation opposite Mrs Tate's residence. M.crars —W. Peddie. £35; supplv and delivery met j George Cockerell; contract No. 22, supply and delivery 1600 cubic yard* gravel on Main Dunback road—Stanley Morrison, at Is 8d per cubic yard: contract No. 23," supnly and delivery of 500 cubic yards gravel. Green Valley road —M. Kitchen, at Is lOd per yard; contract No. 24, supply and delivery of gravel at foot of Sandhills. Green Valley road—M. Kitchen, at Is lOd per yard. Accounts amounting to £320 were passed for payment Or O'Connell gave notice ot the following motion:—" That the general rate for this year ending 31st March, 1913, be levied as follows:—Blue Mountain. Bushey, Goodwoodwood, Dunback, Meadowbank, and Green Valley Ridings. Id in the pound; Macraes Riding, gd in the pound.
