SCHOOL VACATIONS.

LAWRENCE !The break-up and distribution of prizes of the above school took place in the Town Hall on Thursday afternoon, in the presence ef' a goodly nurabeir of parents and friends. The '"chairman of the Sohool Committee (Mr Norrie) presided, and after a short programme of aotiori-songs by £he infant classes and recitations by the older pupils, interesting and instructive addresses were given by Mr James Allen, M.P., and the Ven. Archdeacon Richards. The first-named gentleman also presented the prizes, with the exception of the dux medals, which were presented by the late rector (Mr Stenhouae). At the conclusion of. the prize distribution, the Rev. Mr Durward proposed a hearty vote "of thanks to the speakers, and Mr D. The Tapanui District High School breakTip ceremony took place on Tuesday, and, as usual, proved a very-successful function. The annmU c'istribution of prizes won during the year at the Morven School took place on Thursday afternoon, when the weather was by no means favourable. Mr of Studholme, a member of the Education Board, was present, and handed the prizes to the various winners. Mr Davie, of Hannaton School, was also present, and judged the. garden plots. Mr J T. Hay (chairman) introduced Mr Lindsay to those present, and spoke of the valuable services rendered to the district by

their representative on the board. Mr Lindsay then addressed the assembled children, and congratulated them on the efficient state of their school, as shown by the inspector's reports and comments thereon. He also referred to the fact that the school had an excellent committee, which took a keen interest in the school, staff, and the surroundings generally. Cheers were given for the many donors of the special prizes, judges of sewing (Mesdames J. Caldwell and 'Morrison), of the gardens (Mr P. C. Roslyri, was held yesterdlay afternoon, when a fair number of parents, together with elder brothers and sisters, assembled in the schoolroom to witness the excellent programme given by the children and be present at the prizegiving. The proceedings were opened with a hvmn, and this was followed by a large number of items, including songs, peoitatiens, dialogues, callisthenics, etc. The whole work wias excellently performed, and) Miss Gillies and her assistant are to be congratulated on the high standard of merit attained. The Rev. W. A. R. Fitohett presented tJbe prizes, first making a short speech in which he encouraged the children to ma«ke use of their opportunities and fit themselves to. make not only their own lives but the lives of others better and happier. He also presented Miss Wilson, who is severing her connection with the school after five and a-half y©airs' faithful service, with a beautiful set of -Dickens's works on behalf of Miss Gillies and with a lovely gold ring (topaz) on behalf of the children. ' ' Miss Gillies read the report of the year- & work. Good progress had been made by the children, and careful home preparation, bad done much to secure the steady advancement of each child. The parents were to be'thanked for their kindly co-operation in this respect. The music pupils had dona excellent work and made a good showing both at the recent Competitions and in the Trinity College examinations. The dancing class, under Miss Hooper, assisted by Miss Sawtell, had also doie well, while Miss Major had madi© a splendid success in her department. A special word of thanks was given to Misses • Wilson and! M'Pherson for their assitance throughout the year. Thanks were also extended to Mr Fitahett for his interest in the school, and to the various people who had given donations towards the prizes. It may be added that the programme rendered during the afternoon will be repeated to-night, when a change for admittance will be made, the proceeds to go towards improving the surroundings for the'little ones.
