HERD-TESTING DEMONSTRATION.

The following record of an individual herd of milking oowe was _ crowded out of the department’s exhibit in the Winter Show, and occupied a position over the fat

cattle, 'where very few people saw it. It is a noteworthy record, showing how a herd of cattle might be worked up to a high average. For purposes of comparison the herd is divided into three lots, and an examination of the "return 1 secured by the third lot as compared with lots 1 and 2 will disclose the fact that if those eight cattle were eliminated from the herd the average of the balance of the herd would be nearly £ls per head. If they were replaced by eight others of equal merit to the remaining 16 head the net 'income from tho herd, allowing for 10 cows milking, would bo £486, instead of £373. The work would practically be the same, the cattle food would cost the same, but the dairyman’s income would increase by over £llO per annum. The record is worth studying closely. The actual record of a milking herd selected to show the value of weighing and testing butter-fat as calculated at lid per lb all through : , LOT 1.
