OTAGO CHESS CLUB. OPENING NIGHT. The opening of the Otago Chess Club's season was the occasion of a large gathering in the dub rooms on Monday, Bth iinst. Tbe President (Mr F. J. Mouat) read an apology from the Hon. J. A. Millar, who was prevented by a cold from performing the opening function, but he wished the clulb a very successful season. " The President asked members to join in according a hearty welcome to his Worship the Mayor — (applause),—who, though not a chess player, knew a move or two. in municipal politics.(Laughter.) He was sure all would wish his Worship a most successful year of office, during which he would receive, assistanco from two valiant " knights" in the persons of Crs Marlow and Myers, who were both members of their club. Amongst the members of the City Council were four lawyers, who might be looked on by chess players as "rooks."—(Laughter.) Of course, ho was only speaking metaphorically, as in chess, as they knew, rooks were very valuable pieces, and no doubt the Mayor! would find in the four gentlemen referred to very valuable allies.—(Applause.) The Mayor, who was warmly applauded on rising, thanked the members of fcho club for the very kindly references made* to him. He regretted that Mr Millar was not present to officially open their season, but he (the Mayor) was very pleased to do what Mr Miliar would have done had not a cold prevented his attendance. Their president had pleasantly alluded to four of the members pf the City Council as " rooks," but he might 'tell them -that one of those rooks was his son-in-law.—(Laughter.) As they knew, the-origin of chess was wrapt) in obscurity, but it no doubt had a reference to the selection by people of a brainy man as their leader. So in the present day it was the cultivated brains that were ruling the world, and he did not know how ithey could better cultivate their brains than by playing chess. He used to play chess with his wife, but as she always beat him he had given the game up.—(Laughter.) Ho had much picasure in declaring the season open, and hoped that the members would be successful in discovering new openings that would astonish the world.— (Laughter and applause.) The Rev. A. T. Chodcwski, on behalf of the members, thanked the Mayor for hia attendance.

The season was .then opened by the Mayor making' the time-honoured move of P—K4.

A match between teams selected by the President (Mr Mount) and Vice-president (Mr H. Armstrong) was then contested, with the following results:—

15i 134 At an interval the players were regaled with light refreshments at the invitation of the vice-presidents. Matthews are new members, who have recently joined the Otago Chess Club. The Cheltenham Examiner has it thus:— " This life is but a world of care; Man needs some recreation— The monotony of daily foil Oft causes dissipation; Then turn you to the chequered board. Enjoy its combinations; Its problems, traps, and counter shots, And many variations."
