GOLF.

NOTES BY BULGER. The final for the Otago Club's championship (36 holes), which was played off last week, resulted in a splendid struggle between B. \.J. Smith (holder) and C. W. Rattray. The first 18 . holes saw Rattray playing at the'top of his form, and when they started out for the second 18 he held a substantial lead. Smith, however, with characteristic doggedness, and playing perfect golf, gradually reduced the gap, until, at the 33rd hole, they . were all square., Smith, still playing brilliantly, won the next; the 35th was-halved in Bogey, and Rattray, who was fighting it out splendidly, won the 36th, making the match all square and necessitating further play. Rattray pulled his tee shot, which kicked off the hill into the rushes, and he had to requisition his niblick to get out. Under the circumstances ho got a good second. Smith got a beautifully straight drive, and landed his second ten yards short of the green. Rattray made a great recovery, his third lying hole-high about three yards below the pin. His put was a good effort, just missing the hole by a couple of inches. Smith's third was a yard and a-half past

the flag, but he holed the put and won the championship after the most strenuous and exciting match ever played in the history of the competition. Both men deserve credit for their fine display. The golf was tip-top, and Smith had to beat Bogey by seven strokes to win. The finals of the Otago Golf Club championship were concluded on the Balmaoewen Links on Saturday, when B. J. Smith defeated 0. W. Rattray at the thirty-seventh hole, and won the championship. A medal match was played at the St. Clair Links on Saturday. The following are the best cards handed in:—
