FRACAS IN A RAILWAY CARRIAGE.
A RACE TRAIN INCIDENT. CHRISTCHURCH, May 12. According to statements made at the Magistrate's Court this morning by counsel appearing foir two men charged with behaving in an objectionable manner in a railway -carriage, the ride from Rangiora to Christchurch after the recent races must have been an exciting time for the inmates of one second-class carriage. It seems that a squabble started over a packet of cigarettes, and the owner of the packet had his head pushed through the glass of a window. He retaliated by doing the same by his assailant. One of the defendants entered the carriage and was knocked down twice. After that he fought—it was not quite clear with whom. The original assailant escaped, and when the police came the two men charged gave their correct names and paid for the damage done. The police reports of the incident made no mention ot the alleged third party, so the two men were fined—one 10s and the other 20s.
