CAVERSHAM INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL. The breaking-up ceremony in connection with the Cavorsham Industrial School was held on the 21st inst., when there was a hu-ge attendance. In the unavoidable absence of Mr T. K. Sidcy, M.P., the Rev. V. G. Bryan King occupied the chair. The children submitted an excellent and enjoyable programme of songs, choruses, and drills, while Muriel Barnes contributed a recitation, “Planting a Tree.” Miss Clara Matheson kindly played the accompaniments. The Matron (Miss Kempton) submitted her report, which said, inter alia:—“The girls present represent only a very small portion of a large family. They had 172 children, ranging in age from a few weeks to 14 years, boarded out in foster-homes, and, in addition to the work of the mam ager and inspectors visiting these homes, they had a number of ladies wlvo tako a keen interest in the work, and who, month by month, visit the children and foster-parents. All children committed, with few exceptions, come up here till their outfits were made and suitable homes found. The needs of service boys and girls were arranged for, and in the case of the service girls most of their clothes made there. When a girl for any reason left her situation, she stayed irr the school during the time of change, so it would be readily seen that no member of the staff had many idle minutes. During the year the happiness of the young folk had been enhanced by the treats and privileges given by those outside who have a genuine regard for the school. They were indebted to the manager of Messrs John Fuller and Sons’ Pictures for kindly invitations, also the A. and P. Society for invitation to tho winter show ; to the official visitors, Mrs Ross and Mrs Blair, for tea given to the girls, followed by a lantern entertainment arranged for by Mrs H. H. Driver; to the Rev. T. G. B. King, the First Church Bible Claes, and the Sunday school teachers for teas and entertainments during the year; and to the committee of the Presbyterian Mission for kind invitation to their exhibition. The Chairman said that, as the one who, perhaps, had had the longest connection with the school, he would like to say how deeply pleased he was with tho noble work Miss Kempton was doing. It needed no further praise than to glance at the faces of the children 1 . Miss Kempton was not a manager' —she was a mother, and not only to the girls in the school, but also to those outside. He hoped e!he might bo long spared to continue her good work.—■ (Applause.) The speech-making was cut happily ; short, and the numerous speakers did nothing further than, perhaps, to express wishes for a happy Christmas and a bright New Year. The prizes were presented by Mesdames , Ross and Blair (official visitors), the Rev. , Mr Hay, the Rev. Mr Axelscn, and Dr i Falconer, while the Rev. C.
