THE HOCKEN MEMORIAL.
A meeting of the Hocken Memorial Oommittee was held on the Ist instant, and attended by Mr A. Bathgate (in the chair), Dr Benha.m, Dr Oolquhoun, MessTS James Allen, M.P.. G. Fen wick. W. D. Stewart, C. R. Smith, C. E. Keast, W. Burnett, M. Cohen, and W. Fels. Mr Bathgate was appointed chairman and hon. secretary of the committee, and Mr Stewart hon. treasurer. Arrangements were made for placing the objects of the committee before all Mayors and chairmen of County Councils in the Otaeo provincial district, and before exresidents of Otago now settled in other parts of the Dominion. It was decided that the sum of £6OOO would be required in order that the objects of the committee might be fulfilled, and it was resolved to bring the claims of the movement upon the State under the notice of the Government, it being pointed out that, since the maintenance of Dr Hocken s library would have been a charge upon the State if the gift -had gone to Wellington, the fact of its location in Dunedin should not affect the obligation of the State in! the matter.
