DR HOCKEN'S WILL.
CHARITABLE BEQUESTS. j Probate of the will of the late Dr Hocken was granted in the Supreme Court on Mav 27, on the application of Mr Brent, to Mrs Hocken and Dr Scott, the executors. The estate was sworn at under £26,000. The will ?,n-d codicil devises everything to the executors upon trust to sell—subject in each case to the widow's life interest: (1) 1900 shares in the National Insurance Company, 522 shares in the West-port Coal Company, 2240 shares in the Standard Insurance Company, and 650 shares in the Talisman Consolidated Gold Mining Company, upon trust for the University of Ota go; (2) to sell #5 shares in the Dunedin Stock Exchange Proprietary, 261 shares in the Mosgiel Woollen Coirinany, and ffi7 shares in Whitcombe and Tombs (Ltd), upon trust for the Dunedin Diocesan Board, to be held by it to provide out of the income thereof for the increase of the stipends ci the poorer Anglican clergy in the diocese of Dunedin; (3) to sell six debentures ini the Dunedin F-ermhill Club Proprietary and 166 shares in the National Bank of New Zealand, upon trust for the Dunedin Diocesan Trust Board, to apply the income to the Maori Mission Board; (4) 100 shares in the Port Chalmers Gas Company, 250 shares in Mason, Struthers, and Co. (Ltd.), and' 100 shares in the Junction Dredging Company (Ltd.), Victoria, upon trust for the Salvation Army, to be applied equally between the Maternity Home (Dunedin), Rescue Home (Caversham), and the Children's Home at Middlemarch; (5) 7 5 shares in the Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company, 250 shares in the Taupiri Coal Mining Company (Ltd.), and 400 shares in the Burnside Hydraulic Cement Company (Ltd.), upon trust for the Dunedin Public Art Gallery; and (6) 100 shares in the Dannevirke Gas Company (Ltd.), and 275 shares in the Phoenix Confectionery Company (Ltd.), upon trust for the Trinity Methodist Church, Dunedin. The will provides that if any of the shares are sold under the power of call given bv the will to the trustees, the money realised" is to be applied in the same manner as if the shares had not been sold. One hundred guineas are bequeathed to his cook, an old servant, and after certain other bequests, Miss Hocken receives the residue of the estate. It was stated by Dr Hocken in his will that he was confident that the citizens of Dunedin would raise sufficient funds to provide, by means of the income thereof, the yearly salary of a librarian to take charge of his collection of books, manuscripts, and other documents.
