TABLE TALK.

Monday Evening. On Tuesday the winter show opened in the Agricultural Hall, when there was a phenomenal attendance. The show is admitted to be one of the that has been yet held. Soma very fine exhibits were shown, and keen interest was taken in the machinery.

There was also a poultry and dog show in. a hall farther along in Crawford street, which was also well attended. On Friday afternoon the children's pets were on view, and keen interest was taken by the youngsters who attended to ascertain if their favourite aiumals had got prizes.

Friday being the King's Birthday was kept throughout the town at. a close holiday. The D.J.C. winter race meeting was held at Wingatui, and the day being beautifullj fine, numbers of people found their way ou to the course. -"her© were very good fieldt diiring the meeting. On Friday evening a ball was given in the> Art Gallerv by a. number of and gentlemen from the country. The dancing room was draned with flags, while a nortion of it was made into a drawing room, with easy chair °. lounges, etc. The music was supplied by Messrs Yates' band. Stmuer was in the water-colour room, half of the room being used to sit out in betw-een the dances. Supper was enjoyed at small tahles, which' were decorated with vases of chrysanthemums. Miss Ewart (matron), on behalf of the nurses, presented Sister Smales with a handsome manicure set. Sinking is becoming more popular every day, and the King's Hall Rink, which was opened last week, is thronged with enthusiasts both morning and evening. Many energetic beginners spend a couple of hours in the morning at the hall, acquiring the art of graceful gliding and balancing. Mrs Oldham (Wanganui) is the guest of Mrs Watson, Forth street. M'r and Mrs Cruicksbank have been visiting Dunedin. OAMARU, June 6. On Saturday night the Skating Rink held its opening evening with a, very large attendance. It has created the usual epidemic, and everyone is spending their time there. The rink certainly is an acqui-' sition in a small town. The cinematograph pictures continue' to be a great attraction, and on Monday last there was an exceptionally large audience and a splendid rcgramme. I noticed amongst those present Mrs Charlie Nicols and the Misses Piper, Mr and Mrs Davis, Mrs and Miss Jones, Miss D,_ Williams, Mr and Mrs Woodward, Mir and Miss M'Gibbon. Mrs Hutchison held this week her usual bridge evening, and which evenings are so very enjoyable. St. Luke's annual bazaar was held last week, and was a very great success. The stallholders are to be congratulated, some of the work being beautiful. Macfarlane and Miss Muriel Dargaville sang, while Miss Betty Griergon contributed ; a piano solo in her usual finished style. The Rev. Mr Cassels and Mrs Cassels, who have bean spending a few weeks in Auckland and Rotorua, have returned to Hawera.
