The Caledonian Club is going the right way about putting "pokers" out of action so far as its own members are concerned. At the annual meeting it was resolved that no member be allowed to play for any of the club prizes unless his bowls have been tested, passed, and stamped by the official bowl-tester of the N.Z.B.A. If other clubs follow the example of the Caledonian Club they will be doing much to remove the cause for growling in the ranks. By the way, it is understood that the members of the Caledonian, Dunedin, and North-East Valley Clubs have had nearly all bowls tested and stamped, while from some other clubs very few have been put through.
What is the council going to do about providing facilities for bowl-testing in Christchurch? It is not reasonable to exjiect bow'lers to pay for sending their bowls to Dunedin and returning them, in addition to also paying the fee for the actual test. As soon as the next season opens, the association should secure an official for Christchurch, and have him trained by Mr Scott, so that he can carry out his duties on the same lines as Mr Scott himself. That officer could then pay a visit extending over a week or so to Timaru to put through all bowls submitted. Mr Scott could pay similar visits to Invercargill and Oamaru. Of course, the council would have to pay the expenses of the officers, and would also have to pay for the making of another chute.
It has been repeatedly urged as an argument against insisting on the bowls of all winners of association prizes being tested before the prizes are handed over that no player was likely to interfere with their bowls after they were stamped. It is currently reported that at least one bowler, after receiving hie bowls from the official tester after they had been altered, at once set to work to still further alter them. Whether it was in the direction of decreasing or increasing the bias is not stated.
The annual report of the Gore Club is of a highly satisfactory nature. The formation of the Hokonui Club resulted in about 20 members leaving and joining the new olub, but, despite this fact, the present season closed with 55 members, or 11 more than at the close of last season. The report adds that the Hokonui Club has also had a successful season, and _ congratulates its members on that fact, as it shows there was room for two clubs in Gore. The Gore Club oommenced the season with a. debit balance, and liabilities totalling £25. and ended with only an overdraft of £ll throughout the season. Afternoon tea was nrovided bv the president and Mr J. A. Paterson. The standard of play was well kept up despite the loss of old players. Fourteen intev-club matches were played. In the four-rink championship the club won five out of the seven played. Four rinks from the Waikouaiti and Palmerston BowliiWf Clubs visited Oamaru on the King's Birthdav, and vlayed a match against the Phoenix Club. The green was in splendid condition, and the gameiproved to be most enjoyable. The result was a win for the home team by 25 points. The Phoenix Club has gone through the past season without suffering a defeat, and the players selected to meet the visitors on this occasion had no difficulty in prov/'.nc; thdr, superiority in. all points of the game.
