The third set produced a battle royal, Parker's ground strokes and Brookes's volleys contending for mastery. Brookes led at 3—2, but Parker retaliated, and three all was called. The score was 5—3 in Parker's favour, and the excitement was intense as he led at 30 love in the ninth game. Brookes won the next four points in succession. They were level at the tenth. SYDNEY, June .6. Mr Pardon, writing in the Sunday Times, states that £t. South Africans will be greatly overmatched by the Australian cricketers in skill and by the immense superiority of their batting. LONDON, June 3. Dr Poidevin, in a letter to the Daily Express, referring to the South African cricket team, declares that it is unlikely that the Board of Control will give a. guarantee of £SOOO for a short season unless it is allowed to approve of the personnel of the team. If the South Africans play good cricket they will have nothing to fear financially. Dr Poidevin does not think that the hitch will affect the triangular matches.
