Two years ago, after the bush fires, the Government came to the assistance of settlers by advancing grass seed free of interest, so that the land affected might be resownas speedily as possible. There were thus aided 328 settlers to the extent of £13,579. At the last meeting of the Wellington Land Board the chairman stated that the first payments had now become due, and out of 328 settlers, who should have paid £4526, only 24, representing £393. had not met their accounts. The board did not look at the amounts outstanding as bad, and the be regarded a 6 satisfactory.
