RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB First Day—Friday, June 3.

The Dunedin Jocke'y Club commenced its winter meeting yesterday in fine weather, but towards the end of the day it became rather cold. The track was good and firm, and one of the largest attendances that has ever assembled at a winter meeting filled the enclosures. Tha Citizens' Band discoursed excellent music. Proceedings commenced with the Hurdle Race, in. which Rifle Range looked a winner after landing over the last fence, but then Jack Ashore put in a good run and, finishing fast, won nice'ly. Adage was always well-placed in the Brighton Handicap, and won with something to spare'. Then came the Birthday Handicap, in which Paragon, was made favourite on the totalisator. He got rather the worst of the start, however, and St. Aidan, who was lying handy, won a good race from. Paragon and Cronstadt. The Otago Steeplechase saw quite a chapter of accidents, in, which the majority of the field either iran off, refused, or fell. Ultimately it became a duel between The Gunner and Wanganui, and when the leaders passed the post the horses following had not risen to the last fence, being about two furlongs away.. Although lavaral fa.lla

took place, nothing serious happened to the riders. Octave was always prominent in the Tradesmen's Handicap, and won Witt a 39 ,de to spare from Cute, with Officious close up third. Miss. Dorie took charge in the Saddle Hill Handicap in the run home, and won by a fair margin. The day's sport concluded with the Winter Welter Handicap, in which there we're a dozen starters. It was a ding-dong tussle inside the distance between Fasnakyle and Waiju, but the latter had made his effort too late l . Thirteen bookmakers were licensed at a fee of £2O each. During the day speculation was exceedingly brisk. On the totalisator the sum of £10,082 10s was invested, as against £7682 10s for the opening day of the winter meeting last year. The following are the results of the day's events:— PACIFIC HURDLE HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs; second lOsovs, third ssovs. One milg and three-quarters. Mr J. From that out it was a battle between The Gunner and Wanganui, and finally the former won with something in hand by three lengths. Fasnakyle stalled off the -opposition, and won nicely from Waiju, who came with a late run and finished within half a-length of the winner, Adage close up third, Speculate fourth, and Armamento fifth. Time, lmin 3lscc. Second Day—Saturday, June 4. Rain overnight made matters look unpromising for the concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting on Saturday. The attendance was, nevertheless, very good, which was no doubt largely owing to the fact of there being so many visitors from the country in town. The track was rather greasy. Eleven bookmakers were licensed and the total put through the machines for the day was £7625 10s which is an increase of £1263 10s on the second day of last year's meeting. The sum put through for the two days this year was £17,708. For last year the total reached £14,044 10s, so that the club this year has gone over that by £3663 10s. The day's sport was fairly interesting, but the rain that fell at intervals made things somewhat unpleasant, and the horses in the last race could hairdly be made out owing to the early nightfall, and the heaviest fall of rain experienced during the afternoon just setting in prior to the start. In the Hurdle Race Coy and Jack Ashore were withdrawn. Rifle Range was always prominent and was too good for his opponents. Manillus began well in the Silverstream Handicap, and won nicely. All that coloured on the card, went to the post for the Provincial Handicap and Gunboat won a very fine race from Cronstadt by the narrowest of margins, whilst all the rest of the field finished well up. It was one of the best races ever seen on the course; Genius led the oppostion in the early part of the race, but faded out at the business' end. In the Steeeplechase Honest Tom was alvtfiys prominent, and after showing the way almost throughout, won handsomely from Deersilayer. The Wai-Ronga Handicap provided a. fk.e race, and winning honours went to Officious, who stalled off a good run by Obsono at the finish. In the Clarendon Handicap, Cashier was always in evidence and won after stalling off a challenge by Adage. The final event of the day as previously .mentioned was witnessed 'during a heavy shower of rain and in failing light. Pinul was practically in the van until the straight was reached where he was passed by Grand Slam who won by half a length. ; Following are the results of the day s sport:—■ FAIRFIELD HURDLE HANDICAP. The quartet got away on terms, and Rifle Range, took up the running and led over the first two fences. Rifle Range landed in the back stretch two lengths clear of Whatakura, and a similar distance away came Gold Dredge, Southern Cross bringing ud the rear, fully six lengths awav. Running round the far turn Gold Dredge was right out of it, and crossing the second last fence Rifle Range was leading by half a dozen lengths. Rifle Range ran home that distance in front of Southern Cross, with eight lengths away third, and Gold Dredge beaten off.
