Mr Scantlebury appeared for Mrs Ainge, and Mr Watson appeared personally. The Chairman said the police had drawn the committee's attention to the fact that in November last certain street betting was done opposite these two hotels, in Princes street and High street. The police report was that it did not appear that the licensees were aware of the state of affairs, but it seemed that the barmen in both places were cognisant of the irregularity, and took no steps to prevent it. The Inspector of Police thereupon forwarded a memorandum to both licensees, the result of which had been very satisfactory. But there was this point about the case to which the committee wished to draw the licensees' attention: There was still room for further vigilance in order to stamp out the vicious practice complained of. The committee would be glad if the licensees would direct that the barmen be more vigilant in the matter. It was pleased to know that the warning to -the licensees had proved satisfactory, and it hoped now that the harmen would be instructed to be more vigilant.—Mr Scantlebury 'undertook to '"nform his client of the committee's wishes. —Mr Watson said he was glad the matter had been mentioned, as the people who gathered on the street would learn what the committee had said. Of course, it was not oossible for a licensee to be everywhere about his premises. Both applications were then granted. RENEWALS. Bowling Green Hotel, Walter Digby Wyatt.—Granted. Mr Stevenson went Horae, and it was through the change of managership taking place that these matters svere not attended to. The employees were now well posted in the law, and he was satisfied that the committee would hear of no objections in the future. —The Chairman said ho mentioned the matter to show that licensees must comply with the act. He was not going' into the question of how far the powers of the committee extended, but if the offences continued the committee would look into that question.
