The New Zealand Shipping Company's Steamer Waimate, which left London on April 10 for Dunedin direct with 2700 tons of general cargo for this port, 190 ff tons for Bluff, and 250 tons for Lyttelton, arrived at the Heads at 2 a.m. on Saturday. She steamed up to Port Chalmers a*" 10.30 a.m., anchored in the stream for half-an-hour, and then came up to town, making fast at the Victoria wharf shortly after 12.30. Under the new arrangements for medical inspection and clearance, more than usual delay was caxist'J. owing to these functions being postponed until the steamer made fast at the wharf, and agents, pressmen, relatives and friends of those on board were kept waiting on the wharf in a drizgling rain for ever an hour, while Dr Champtaloup fhealth" officer) made his inquiries and inspection. As the steamer arrived at the 'Heads at 2 a.m., and was at the Port , shortly after 10 o'clock, it was generally : thought that the Customs and medical officers could have gone on board at Pore, Ijnade their inspections on the journey up the harbour, and thus have had the vessel cleared when she berthed at the wharf. JThe Waimate. on getting clear of her JJunediin cargo, wil go to Portl and load frozen meat, then leavt for (the - Bluff, where she will continue discharge, and takes in loading, .then going to Oamaru for further loading, and thence to Lyttelton to complete discharge, i 1 After leaving London on April 10, the fcfceamer had fine weather down the ChanBel, and westerly and south-westerly gales were experienced in the Bay of Biscay, peneriffe was passed on April 18, and the Slew Zealand Company's Ruahine spoke - he steamer on April 30 in lat. 12deg. Fogav weather on the New Zealand coast was responsible on Monday, 6tb inst., for delaying shipping. The Moana, for Melbourne, was six hours late in reaching Bluff from Dunedin, while the Ulimaroa. from Melbourne, was also delayed, and did not reach Bluff until midnight. Reports of similar detentions came to hand from: northern ports, the Corinna, Mararoa, Moura, and Mabeno all being delayed. Stormy weather prevailed over New South Wales on the 3rd, and snow fell at several places on the high lands. A heavy eea was running on the coast, and vessels arriving reported stormy experiences.
