THE CRETAN QUESTION
EXCITEMENT IN TURKEY
LONDON, May 30. The Grand Vizier told the Turkish
Chamber that the solution of the Cretan problem was negotiation with the protecting Powers, not with Greece and Crete. He added that if Greece intervened Turkey would be obliged to have recourse to arms. She would not hesitate at any sacrifice to retain Crete. Telegrams from the provinces show that the question is arousing great effervescence in Turkey. The Minister of Marine has resigned owing to a divergence of views with the Grand Vizier.
Reuter says that the Young Turk Committee at Trebizond and Samsun, despite the Porte's disapproval, has decreed .d boycott of Greek shipping. At Jaffa the mob attacked several Greek shops and beat the occupants. June 5.
The Berlin Tageblatt's Athens correspondent advises that 10,000 members of the 1908 reserves have been summoned, owing to the movement of Turkish troops near the frontier. When in Paris the King of Greece, it is said, saw President Fallieres and other Ministers, and he has now arrived privately at Rome, with a view to discussing the Cretan question further. CANDIA, June 2.
The Cretan Executive Committee has addressed a note to the Powers declaring that Crete cannot live without Greek institutions, and requesting the Powers to bring about the only solution by promoting a union between Crete and Greece.
Official opinion in Patras is that the new claim imposes upon the Powers the necessity of considering the situation courageously with a view to reaching a definite solution.
