FATAL FIRE IN MELBOURNE

MELBOURNE, March 4.

The residence of Constable Day was destroyed by fire. Mrs Day and an infant perished, and two other children were badly burned. In connection witß the burning fatality, it was discovered that Mrs Day's throat was cut. The circumstances indicate that the woman, who was in poor health, suddenly became demented, and set fire to the house, cut her throat, and then dashed into the flames.. A fire was lit in each of four rooms. A neighbour rescued two little boys who were found screaming near a bed which was on fire. The door was barricaded. He subsequently returned, and endeavoured to rescue the baby, but the flames beat him back.
