At Timaru on February 26 Mr V. G. Day, 8.M., remarked that drunkenness was increasing in Timaru, and the police explained that this wa3 due to an influx of harvesters with cheques. Mr Day said that he was seriously considering the-ques-tion of increasing the fines for drunkenness. He thought it extraordinary that Timaru should equal Christchurch in the number of pareons. coming before the court on charges of drunkenness. The rainfall at Oamaru for the month of February, as recorded by the obsorver (Mr J. Patterson), totalled 0.99 in. Rain foil on three days, the maximum .fail being 0.92 in on the 26th.
