FIRES.
NELSON, March 4
The Rising Sun Hotel, Waimea road, a wooden building, was totally destroyed by fire at 3 o'clock this morning. The licensee, Mr Paul Mitchell, and his family had a narrow escape. The staircase was on fire, and they had to descend from the windows with fire-escape ropes. The building, owned by Dodson and Sons, Brewers, was insured for £450 in the Standard office, and the furniture and stock for £3OO in the Northern Union. TIMARU, March 2.
A fire occurred in Hay's building in Stafford street at midnight. It started in Leslie and "O'CaJlaghan's store (upstairs), and spread to the billiard saloon adjoining. The stock in the store was damaged by fire and water, and the furniture below by water. The billiard tables and saloon fittings were much damaged. It is estimated that the damage to the stock was about £SOO, to the building £SOO, and to the billiard saloon £l5O. The insurance on the whole building was £2OOO. in the North British. O'Callaghan's stock was insured for £IOO in the State Office, and £250 in the Liverpool and London and Globe, and the billiard tables and fittings for £350 in the State Office.
A shop and dwelling afc Mosgiel, the vogerty of Mrs Br- wn, and tenanted by Mr Marcella. were destroyed bv fire on the Ist, at 11.45 p.m. The building was insured in the Royal Exchange office for £IOO, and the furniture for £6O in the Standard office.
