WELLINGTON, March 1. The Hauroto arrived early this morning from Tahiti. When at Papeete an epidemic of dengue fever had broken out among the population, and by some means had been carried to Rarotonga. During the ship's voyage to Wellington the purser (Mr P. Caflin) ako developed the fever, which is very similar in its general characteristics to influenza in its acute forms. Mr Caffin is progressing satisfactorily. The Hauroto's fruit cargo is not 'very lar^e. PREFERENTIAL RATES. . .AUCKLAND, March 5. Mr Ghaudin, of the firm of Kronfeld and Co., stated at the Chamber of Commerce Council that the Union Company are giving preferential rates between Fiji and Sydney as against Fiji and Auckland. In some cases, he said, the difference was as much as 15 per cent., and Auckland had practically lost the Fiji trade. The council resolved to ask the Union Company for a reply to the allegation. [The management of the Union Steam Ship Company informs us that it does not know anything of the alleged preferential rates between Fiji and Sydney and Fiji and Auckland; both ways the rates are identical.]
The Shaw, Savvll, and Albion Compamy'e new twin-screw steamer Rangatira left Liverpool on February 24 on her maiden voyage to New Zealand ports. The Rangatira. is a large vessel of 8200 tens, specially built by Workman. Clark, and Co., of Belfast, for the New Zealand trade. She is due at Auckland about April 8, and at Lyttelton about April 18. During 1909, exclusive of warships, 526 vessels of 991,066 tons gross (viz., _ 465 steamers of 792,799 tons, and 61 sailing vessels of 18,267 tons) were launched in th& United Kingdom. The warships launched at both Government and private yards ,*\mount to 42 of. 126,230 tons displacement. Practically the whole of the tonnage launched has been built of steel, and over 93g pe.r cent, is composed of steam tonnage. The Glasgow district occupies the first place among the principal shipbuilding centres of the country, showing an output of 204,451 tons. Then follow in order Newcastle (182.235 tons), Greenock (167.658 tons), Sunderland (132,371 tons), Belfast (118,295 tons), Middlesbro' (62,492 tons), and Hartlepool (57,712 tons). In warship tonnage Barrow leads with 46,450 tons, followed by Portsmouth with 38,650 tons, and Glasgow 16,290 tons.
