UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting- of the University Council, held on the 7th, was attended by Messrs James Allen, M.P. (chancellor, presiding), Hon J. R. Sinclair, Rev. A. Cameron, Professor Hewitson, Dr Scott, Dr Church, Mr John Roberts, C.M.G., Mr D. Stewart, Mr T, K. Sidey, M.P., and Mr L. Harris. Professor Shand wrote apologising for non-attendance. PtKANCE. The schedule of income submitted showed that £275 16s lid had been, received since last meeting. The Finance Committee reported that the schedule of expenditure up to February 28, 1910 (inclusive), amounting to £1647.17s 6d had been passed for payment. The bank pass book, produced, showed a credit balance on February 28, 1910, of £957 18s Id. Unpresented cheques amounted on that date to £1499 0s Bd, leaving a debit balance of £541 2s 7d. The committee further reported that a report from Mr R. S. Allan, C.E., re the Leith retaining wall, was referred to the council. COBP.ESPONDENCE. The editor of the Calendar, wrote regretting that Dr Hocken's name was not entered in its proper place at the top of the list of University Councillors. The mistake had arisen by confounding the date of Dr Hocken's reappointment with the date of his original appointment in 1885. The matter had been noted for the next issue.—Received. The Secretary of the Charitable Aid Board wrote stating that his Finance Committee had selected Dr Ritchie for the position of assistant surgeon at the Maternity Hospital at a salary of £55 per annum. The fee payable by each student had been fixed by the board at three guineas.—Received. L. J. Bardsley wrote forwarding the following resolution:—" That the Women's Christian Temperance Union in convention, assembled at Invercargill, wishes to express its high appreciation of the action of the Otago University in founding a chair of Domestic Science, and appointing a lady professor to fill that position. The members trust that e'er long the Christchurch. Wellington, and Auckland University Colleges will follow the lead." — R.gcglvc'cL The Secretary of the Board of Governors for the Otago Boys' and Girls' High Schools wrote stating that owing to the failure of the council to appoint two governors during the month of January, the council was not at present represented on this body.—Messrs Harris and_ Sidey were appointed to represent the University Council on the High Schools Board of Governors. Dr Stuart Moore wrote conveving his thanks for being reappointed honorary anassthetist and for expression of thanks for past services.—Received. DENTAL APPOINTMENTS. The Dental School Committee reported that at a meeting on February 25 to consider a letter from Dr Pickerill and to appoint honorary dental surgeons, Messrs J. Reid~ Burt, Frank Armstrong, and J. S. Nicolson were appointed honorary dental surgeons to the Dental School for the remainder of the current year. Dr W. A. Fleming had been appointed honorary anaesthetist for the same period.—Adopted. APPOINTMENTS. It was moved by Mr Sidey and seconded by the Rev. A. Cameron that Dr Hocken be appointed .Vice-chancellor of the Otago

University. The motion was carried unanimously.
