RIFLE SHOOTING.

TRENTHAM MEETING.. FIRST DAY. TRENTHAM, March 4. The camp was alive early this morning, end before 8 o'clock competitors commenced ; to gather at the squadding post. At 8.30 Colonel Collins mounted the platform, and addressed vhe competitors. He spoke of the remarkable progress the association had made, and pointed to the rapid addition to the entries, which this year numbered nearly 590, as against 525 last year. He also congratulated the New Zealanders upon 1 having a number of representative Ausl" tralian rifle shots among them, and said it I was the first time an Australian team had ~. .taken part; in a rifle meeting at Trentham, and i he wished them every success, and assured • them of a fair field and no favour. He hoped to make such progress with the 1 shooting as to finish the championship series (with the exception of the King's), in : addition to the Service and Teams' Matches, by Wednesday night, leaving only the S Empire Match,.. Champion Teams' Match, I and King's Match, the latter of which I would be fired on Friday afternoon. By this time the weather, which had been a I dull, drizzling rain all the morning, had settled into a thick, hazy rain, which made m amatters exceedingly uncomfortable for the H competitors. Among those taking part §§ were representatives of all ages, from the " : grey-haired veteran to the boy hardly out £of his teens. All parts of New Zealand, as I well as New South Wales and Victoria, i ; were represented. The first matches taken 1 were the Volunteer and Rifle Clubs', which 1 were fired in conjunction. The Tanges were R 200, 500, and 600 yards, the ordinary bull's--eye target being used at 200, and the K green and bronze target with a male khaki !--7 figure at tlie longer ranges. The latter II "was a distinct innovation, and it was doubt- '': ful "how the marksmen would view it. Of "'.-■ the competitors, the greater number were T-using the new aperture sight, which has |S; given the greatest impetus to shooting it •'- has ever received. As a consequence a - number of men who had given up shooting have taken up the sport again, and K this year finds them side by side with the H younger boys. The ammunition used at I the meeting had been -specially manuf&c----1 tured by the Colonial Ammunition Com- | pany, and was packed for convenience in 1 packets of 11 and eight rounds. When I', shooting started the light was absolutely ■.--■' dead. Drifting rain and light, puffy wind v upset even. the most experienced. - Among the competitors were many I veterans, but Captain Dormer, of Auck- :.'- land, who is 72 years of age, was the oldest. Captain Dormer had not fired for 10 years, but recently securing an aperture 1 sight, he discovered he could still shoot with . reliability, and put up 93 in the .match, getting" well into the prize-list. The H following were the possibles at 500yds:—G. Crimp (Green Island), Smart (Wellington), | Liddle (Lincoln), Bryan (Waiuku). At : 600yds: Jones (Dunedin), Price (Wellington). The following is the prize-list:— RIFLE CLUB MATCH. 200, 500, and 600 yards. Seven shots.

Despite the fact that the conditions for shooting were not brilliant, possibles were made by L. Loveday (Ohura), Green (Westport), and J. Guy (Na-hatu). THIRD DAY. TRENTHAM, March 7. It would be hard to find a more trying ; day for shooting than to-day. The Trentham range was at its very worst. Tricky is but a mild term for the vagaries of the I wind and the light that made up the day. i To the spectators, of whom there were a number, the range never looked better. The sun shone with a brilliant radiance, the heat beins: tempered by a refreshing breeze, but all these things were fatal. to good shooting. Mirage, tricky wind,, kaleidoscopic light, and, in fact, all the weather vagaries except rain were joined together to upset the equilibrium of the shootist. The result of this was poor scoring. Shooting started at 9.45 with the 600 yards of the Wellington Match and 900 yards of the Otago Match, both matches having been left half completed on Saturday. At 600 yards the highest score was 49, but Ayson (Murihiku) and Grant (Taradale) succeeded in scoring possibles at 900 yards. There were, however, at each of these ranges a number of 49's. Fisher, the ' winner of the Wellington Match, put on 49 at 600 yards, and thus beat Parslow, Baker, and James on the count. In the 900 yards F. Moyes (Denniston) won with 94. In the afternoon the >veather became more uncertain, and the result was much more unreliable sooring. This was especially the case with regard to the Australians, none of whom seemed able to grasp the tricks of the range. At the close of the Wellington Match Frank (Nelson) was still leading in the aggregate, but the 900 yards i was fatal to his chance, and when the Otago Match was completed Marshall (Karori), at one time one of the most reliable short range shots in New Zealand, was leading, with King (Christchurch) close up. i WELLINGTON MATCH. 1 500 and 600 yards; 10 shots. j Fisher (Stoke), £5 96 Parslow (Akarana), £4 96 Baker (Wellington), £3 96 j James (Napier), £4 ... 96 Smith (Hastings), £3 ... 95 Tonkin (Dunedin), £2 95 King (Linwood), £2 94 Piggott (New South Wales), £2 .•. ... 94 Moselem (Kaeo), £2 ... 94 Ching (Lyttelton), £1 ... 94 The following" take £l each: —Frank (Nelson), Govenlock (Woodville), York (Waitahuna), Shaw (Auckland), Marshall (Karori), Willoughbv (Gladstone), Russell j (Hutt Valley), Whiteman (Upper Hutt), 1 Mac Knight (Maniototo), ' Greig (Upper J Hutt), Kells (Palmerston North), Given !
