WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY.

SYDNEY, March 1. The operator who received the Powerfill's message on Friday again picked up the flagship last night when lying 'in Auckland Harbour. Some of the messages were indistinct, but two, one of about a dozen words, were received quite plainly. The latter was received about 11.26. The successful experimenter' is Mr Pike, of the Works Department. Mr Heskett, the chief electrical engineer, considers that Mr Pike's detector will prove valuable as a means* of extending the range of a given plant with a given expenditure of energy. • Mr Pike's use of an aerial wire only 50ft high shows that great aerial height is not essential to successful receiving. A noticeable fact is that Mr Pike's best result was "obtained late at night, and that it tallies with the experiences of the naval authorities.

March 3

The Pioneer picked Tip and answered the Powerful's wireless message from the North Cape on Thursday night. The following night the Pioneer's apparatus was dismantled in order to install a more powerful one. The. Cambrian's gear was also down, otherwise it is claiamed that the warships would have got the messages Mr Pike received. Within a short time most of the ships on the Australian station will be fitted with improved instruments similar to those now on the Powerful. It is expected they will then be able to receive and transmit regular messages with New Zealand.

MaTch 7.

H.MtS. Encounter, during the whole of the voyage from Auckland, was in wireless communication with H.M:S. Powerful in Auckland Harbour and H.M.S. Cambrian in Sydney Harbour.

The last message from the Powerful was received while entering the harbour.
