WELLINGTON, . The Hon. George F Richardson,' Minis ter of Lands, Agriculture, Mines, ami Immigration in the Atkinson Government, died to-day, aged 73. The Hon. George Francis Richardson was Minister of Lands and Immigration from October 8. 1887, till January 4, 1891, Minister of Mines from October 8, ISB7, till October 17, 1859, and Minister of Agriculture from October 17, 1889, till January \, 1891 He was born in Cheltenham, England, where he was educated. In 1851, when 14 years of age, he arrived ir New Zealand by the Dominion, one of the second four ships despatched to Lyttelton. and-ho forthwith cam© co Otago. Ho joined the Government service in Dunedijo in 1860 as a eadec in the Sur.vey office, and speedily qualified as a surveyor He remained in the chil service for a quarter of a century a« one of the district surveyors of Southland. Hie took an acthe part in local gov>ernmie<nt, first as a member of road boards and afterwards as a councillor and chairman of tke Southland County Council, and he retained his connection with that body until he became a Minister of tlioCrown. During his political caieer Mr Richardson represented Mataura, for which he was fi'-st ijAected in 1884. He was reelected in 18£ff and in 1890, but at rh'j general election in 1893 he was defeated by Mr M'Nab by' 1417 votes to 1300. In 1896 however, he turned the tables, defeating . Mr M'Nab by 2052 votes to lESI. »He held the seat till 1898, when he resigned. For jnany years he took a prominent part in. tho affairs of the Surveyors' Institute. He met with a buggy accident 10 months ago while inspecting a Wairarapa property on behalf of the Government, and never recovered from its effects. Ho bad only been seriously ill for a few days before his j death. Ho leaves a widow, two sons, and I three daughters.
