BORINGS AT THE NEW ENGINE SHEDS.

The Railway Department's attempt to secure . sufficient fresh ■ water for it 6 purpose at the new engine sheds in Dunedin is not as yet definitely abandoned, and the bore has been made secure for a possible continuation at some future period^ Before any definite conclusion can be safely reached as to whether or not an artesian flow is procurable, it is essential that the bore be extended to bed rock : only then could the locality be fairly condemned for artesian wells. The present bore has proved the existence of three different water-bearing strata. The first was met with at a depth of only 91ft, and showed a very considerable quantity of water, bat of brackish quality, unsuitable for the purpose, and it was consequently cut off. The second made its appearance throughout the bluestone in an insufficient quantity, and a third at the boulder layer at a depth of 345 ft, which was also insufficient.

The following is a list, in condensed form, of the different strata the bore penetrated, giving their depths: — lft to 4-Oft, aand and clay; 40ft to 70ft, boulder rock; 70ft to 91ft, hematite ; 91ft to 95ft, boulders and sand ; 95ft to 128f*. basalt rock ; 128 ft to 157 ft," bluestone : ' 157 ft to 170 ft ,. bluestone boulders and clay: 170 ft ,to 242 ft, rotten, rock ; 242 ft to 271 ft. clay : 271 ft to 344 ft. sand; 344 ft to 348 ft, boulders; 348 ft to 365 ft, hard swampy clay.

An interesting old custom was witnessed at Belford, Northumberland, recently, on the occasion of a marriage. At the conclusion of the ceremony a*stool was placed in the gateway of the churchyard, the youth of the village lined up on either side and compelled the happy couple to jump the Meanwhile, they were pursued and pelt&d with confetti by the rustics.
