A BOY KING'S LOVE AFFAIR.

DETERMINED TO MARHY THE GIRLOF HIS CHILDISH FANCY.

The Daily Mail's Lisbon correspondent told the following story at the beginning of Last month: —

A few days ago the Lisbon papers Mundo and Liberal vaguely referred to some love affair of King Manuel, which had caused a great sensation at court, the young Kinghaving apparently gone so far as to threaten, abdication. These papers, however, gave no details.

After making inquiries from the most trustworthy sources, I am able to give the following details: Ever since childhood! King Manuel, then Duke of Braganza, has manifested hie affection for a young lady belonging to one of the highest Portuguese families, and the daughter of a lord-in-waiting to the King. Apparently the girl fully returned this affection. Neither King Carlos nor Queen? Amelia ever attached much importance to what they deemed a childish fancy, and never expected that the affair would develop into one of serious love. Recently, however, Queen Amelia and Duke Alfonso (King Carlos'6 brother) were talking of the possibility of the marriage of the young King, when, to their great surprise, King. Manuel, who had overheard the conversation, declared his love for the young lady in question, and positively declared that" he would either marry her or not marry at all. He went so far as to declare that he would prefer to abdicate rather than marry against his will. Both Queen Amelia and,; Duke Alfonso vainly remonstrated, entreating him/tto abandon such a ohildish fancy, but all<?|o no result; the youthful monarch said he had already made up his mind on the point.

At Queen Amelia's request the young: lady will leave for an extended tour in Europe, the Queen hoping that a prolonged absence will tend to damp the enthusiasm vid ardour of the young lovers.

Mrs George Johnston, of Kaihiku, one of the best known ladies of the district, where she has resided with her husband for about 46 years, is shown with her great grandson, Ewart Hannah, on her knee. On the left of the picture is Mrs A. "Watt, of Gore, Mrs Johnston's daugh<ter, and in the centre Mrs C. E. Hannah, of Invercargill, grand-

daughter.
