In a case in which a claimant sued to recover the amount of the dividend on a certain race at Ashurst, the Stipendiary Magistrate (Mr James) nonsuited- the plaintiff, remarking that notwithstanding that the totalisator was a legalised form pi gambling no money staked or lost could be recovered in. a court of law. Some of the witnesses examined alleged that a " jockeys' ' ring" existed, while others as strenuously denied any such combination. The evidence, generally speaking was rather conflicting. During the afternoon the chahman stated that the committee did not think the owners were in any way to bk m< > for anything: thai mieKt have occurred, but the committee desired to go fully into ibfy matter, especially as. to the question of whether there was a jockeys' ring or not. Addressing an owner who was giving evidence he said that the, committee expected much assistance from owners, in whose interests it was desirable that the whole thing should be- fully gone into. All the evidence was made under the statutory declaration, and. it 'will in due course be forwarded to the metropolitan committee.
