OBITUARY
• LONDON, -January- 26. :'-.Ouida": '-.Ouida" (Miss Louise de la Ramee), the famous novelist, Is, dead. " Ouida" was once the literary lionne of ',&b> fashionable- -reading world. . _Her eccentricities, her foibles, her power of rapidly- novel -after novel, proclaimed her no ordinary jjerson. ~. ' Some of hesr novels wef% verv^ daring-, and nope pi them rose 'to a high ' level, of literary quality, while,-, on the - other ; hand, TsonMi of them contained real gems, as, for instance, the night attack .in "Under Two Mage." It was reported the other day that "Ouida,'-' once- the brilliant hostess o£ a palace, had been turned out of her hotel' for 'her ' povferty, but it transpired that though she was not wealthy, it -Was h'eu eccentricities in the matter .of keeping animal pets'- which caused her expulsion. In all, /'.Quida.", .wrote .some ■ 42 . novels. Most of them are 'already dead, and the remainder -will not live. Her first novel was published in 1863 and her, last in 1900.
