A PROSPEROUS YEAR. The Southland Frozen Meat Company has just passed through the most sxiccessful year in its history, rhich iff one of the best signs that could be wished of the undoubted prosperity that exists in the farming community. When it is said that the net t profits for the 12 months approximate £12,000, -the. extent of business done w"ll be recognised, and when it is further state* that 1906 was an tional year, and that £8000 was the net profit for that period, it will be batter understood the measure af expansion that the past 12 months has shown in the operations of the company. A factor in the result 's (says the Southland News) that- during the past seaeon the quantity of sheep- that were taken north to be frozen 'in the works there was infinitesimal compared' with previous years, this being due to the shortage of feed. % On the other hand, Southland had an abundance of turnips, grass, etc., and it vta.9 only natural that the position should have been what it tvirned out to be. Some shareholders have occasionally been inclined to complain that the dividends have not been satisfactory, but this year the directors have decided to recommend that 5 per cent, be paid to both A and B shareholders, with a bonus of 1 per cent., the amount paid in this connection last year having been 4 per cent, to A and 5 per cent, to B shareholders. The president (Mr J. M'Queen) will have a happy duty to perform m presenting the year's report' and balance sheet to the annual meeting to be held next month, and the position disclosed justifies the directors m the large expenditure which it has been decided to incur in v alterations,' improvements, and new buildings.
