"VALUABLE FOOD WASTED".

(FHO3t OtJB OwK COSBESBOHDEKT.) AUCKLAND, January 22. Commenting upon the communication of % Wellington resident who witnessed the ivaste of trout at Rotorua, the New Zealand Herald eayet "No one who knows what is taking place will be surprised at 'the indignation expressed by a Wellington resident who ie spending a holiday In the Hot Lakes district, at the scandalous waste

of fish that is going on at Rotorua. By the Government regulations the sale _of trout is prohibited, the conseauence being that during the fishing season hundreds of magnificent fieh are simply waited, there being no means of disposing of them. Thus what would prove a valuable and acceptable addition -to the food supplies of the people of Auokland is deliberately prevented from being made use of. While it is necessary to adopt precautions against the streams and lakes of the district becoming depleted of -fish by the" commercial angler, there ie no reason why the sale of trout should not be permitted under conditions febat -would safeguard the preservation of the fishing. The Auckland Acclimatisation Society some time ago, while -the district was undter its jurisdiction, proposed to establish and control a depot at Rotorua where anglers migbt dispose of their eurplus catches. This would have met the requirements of the case, but the suggestion was vetoed by the Government, and nothing has been done since to improve matters. Though the waters of Rotorua teem with trout, and anglers are perplexed to know what to do with their catohes, it is impossible to buy a single fish in Auck-_ land or elsewhere.- Thie is a atate of things that ought not tto be allowed to continue."
