COUNTRY SALES,
Messrs Daigety and Company (Limited) re port having held their fortnightly sale at Balclutha on Friday last, when they yarded 415 sheep and 45 head of cattle. The bulk of the entry of sheep was comprised of forwardconditioned wethers and small lots of fat wethers. All of these met with a fair demand, resulting in the whole of the entry being cleared at satisfactory rates. Cattle: The yards were well filled. The greater number consisted of well-bred forward-conditioned stpers axi<3 a few pens of fat steers and heifers. Fat cattle met with a good demancf, and although there was not a very strong inquiry for stores, yet the bulk of the entry was cleared at prices ranging from £6 to .€6 15s. Fat steers made £6 10§ to £8 7s 6d; young cattle sold fairly well. The sale 3 were for Mr Robert Houleston \Kakap\iaka), fa* wethers, 245; Mr Thomas Lochhead (Te Houka), fat wethers, 245; Mr George Moffati (Te Houka), fat wethers, at -21s 7d ; Mr W. S. Moffat (Te Houka), fat wethers, at 225; a client, 52 fat wethers at 255, 302 fat and forward wethers, 22s to 22s 9d; Messrs George M'Donald, George Anderson (Stirling), Jamea Fyfe (Waiweia), H. Holgato (Barnego), and others, fat steers and two-year-olds at quotations.
The same company report having held thenmonthly sale at Palinerston. on Monday, the 2nd inst., when they yarded and sold 86 head of cattle and 156 sheep. There was a large attendance of farmers and others, and, although the sale for cattle was not a very brisk one, yet nearly the whole of the entry changed hands at prices that compared favourably with those ruling in other centres. Sheep met with a very good demand. The prices) realised were: For Mr A. Cochrane, 90 crossbred hoggets, 17s 8d; Mr A. M'Lennan (Dunback), 66 fat wethers, 21s lOd. They also sold cattle for Messrs R. M'Clure, W. Gallon, Charles M'Gregor, George Cruickshanks, J. O'Connell (Palmerston), W. Sutherland. Ja3, Russell (Shag Valley), D. J. Ross and N. Culling (Hillgrove), James Caldwell, I>. Lefevre, A. W. Douglas (Hampden), Jame3 Carnegy (Dunback), A. Park (Goodwood), J. Hartstonge and John Sheehy (Moonlight), an 3 A. Fleming (Palmerston).
Messrs Donald Reid r.nd Co., Ltd., report having held their usual monthly sale at the Taieri Saleyards on Tuesday, 3rd inst. Tho entry comprised 114 head of cattle, mostly one and two-year-old steers and heifers, and about 30 dairy cows. Although a number of the Taieri graziers, owing to the recent rains, were not prepared to buy at this sale, there was a fairly large gathering of buyers, ar.cl competition throughout was fairly brisk. With the exception of a few pens the whole entry changed hands at prices which must be considered satisfactory. Except for good sorts, the demand for dairy cows was not veiyj brisk, and several failed to find purchasers. Two-year-old steers sold at £3 5s to £4 lls, v yearling steers £1 15b to £2 10s, yearling stee.s' and heifers £1 10s to £2, dry cows £3 10s tcj £6 11s, dairy cows, £3 5s to £7.
