AUCKLAND
The name of an Auckland constable appeared op th-e list of drunkards at the Police Court on Monday. Defendant's eolicilor applied for an adjournment to obtain evidence for the defence, but the police j>rosecutor strongly objected, as the defendant had known of the charges for several weeks. The magistrate allowed the case to be postponed. A Chinese charged at the Police Court with being in possession of opium pleaded that the drug was only used by him for headaches. He got it five years ago, before opium was prohibited. The Crown Solicitor produced the tin in which the opium was packed, the* label showing it to have been passed by the American Customs in May, 1905. The defendant, who said he was a Christian missionary amongst his countrymen, was fined the maximum of £100. Mrs Katherine Ball, who had been a widow for 71 years, died at Mount Roskill ; aged 100 years and 10 months. She had a remarkably healthy life, and her intellect and memory were perfectly clear to the last.
