POMAHAKA DOWNS

October 7 — We have had oiu usual spiing sncwstcim, accompanied by rather boisterous weather, during tbe last fortnight. At present it is blowing cold from the .east.

The Farm — I think tha most of the oats are now in, and 1 would hope that harvest nray come a little earlier this next season. I'h.e earlier- o owu oaits show a good briard,. On some larms ewes have finished lambing, and 1 hear that percentages will bo pretty high this year. I was glad to iearn that Ihia last snowstoim had not caused many losses. Unfortunately grass is very slow oi growth jusb now.

Dogs. — It is a strange thing thas some farmers are so very careless . about their dogs as never to think of tying them up. There have been several cases of sheep-worrying ihis year. Even orn-t of my own little Hock X have lobt several', and it is quite evident that thie deaths are caused by dogs-, because in. every ease the ewe was lorn on the withers', with a big lusk holo on the inside of the foreleg. Driving into Clir.ton, it is something awful passing tome of tlhe farm buildings. Dcgs rush cut and fly all round, enough to teirify any horse. It reminds nio of a picture I have seen of travellers in Russia being attacked by wolves. I would like to mention that there is a law regarding dogs which makes the owner liable for any damage done to man or beast on the road. But I should think that a neighbourly feeling would causo persons to see that tlieir d&gs do not annoy passers-by.

Roads.— l soo tli? v t £350 has been put on the Estinratcs for the Clinton-Pomahaka road. I trvafc axiihority will be given to have +<his sum expended. There is a grand list this yeai of donations to the country. But what will ba the use if we don't get authority to expend the money during the summer months.

Poultry. — I sco Mrs Davidson has got a building put up iii which she intends to rear purebred silver "Wyandottes.

Wairuna S'choo-l. — As some more improvements are required for this school, the committee has decided to have a social on the evening of Wednesday, th© ISth inst. It will, I understand, be a concert, with tea, cakes, etc., handed round. I hope th© concert will be worthy of th« occasion. I have no fear abcrut the tea and cakes, for the Wairuna ladies are all there for that. It is just possible that the great Scotch singer, Miss Jessie Maclachilan, may bo there, "bub in any case there will be no lack of performers, as I hear that several from various paits of tho world intend being present.
