DRUMNOND.
Octobar 7. — Spring operations are well forward, and the very fine weather fill through has been Inghly favourable for outside wori--. The last fortnight there has not been so inueii growth, and feed i 3 not so good as it promised to he a ?e.v weeks ago. Agricultural. — The crops have brairded wall.
and are still looking well.
A dry -seedbed to
begin with and favourable weather conditions since have given the grabi orop* a gooi start. Pastoral. — Tho lambing has been heavier
this season than it has been for many previous
years, and if wool continues at the present pi-ices the value of stock will not in any way diminish. Thoso who have been holding
cattle in tho belief that bediock prices had
baen reaca-id have not as yet had much en- , cGuragexnent to hope for an improvement.
There is nothing like the same amount of breeding and rearing of cattle as there has been for some yea.Ts, but if tho chilled beer would only succeed, and even a limited export trade ensue, there would be some hope of an upward movement in cattle. Presentation. — On Monday evening, 2ncl inst., thero was a large gathering in Mr John Allison's barn to bid him. farewell, and to make a presentation which he would retail as a memento of respect and esteem from hie neighbours, a'ld his more immediate friends. This took the forn of a social, at which Mr Wni. Storumouth presided, and Mr Jas. Lurnsden presented Mr Allison with a gold watch a.iid a gold brooch for Mrs Allison, subscribed for by tlic&a neighbours with whom he came more immediately in contact. TII3 proceedings were enlivened by songs and recitations, raid Miss Murphy, of the Gladfiekl School, gave the paity a treat with actionsongs, physical drill, and part songs by a few of the school children. This part of the evening's programme seemed to be very much enjoyed by all. Mr John Allison will, I believe, take up hi 3 residence, for some time at least, m Dunedin.
Wedding. — On Tuesday, the 3rd inst. Miss Isabella May Mackintosh, second daughter of Mr Win. Mackintosh, and grand- daughter of tho late Mr Jas. Mackintosh, ex-M.H.E,. for Wallace, was- married to Mr John Titchener, of Invercargill. The bride was the recipient of a great many beautiful and valuable presents. Having been organist in the Presbyterian and YVesleyan Churches for about two years, both of those denominations forwarded valuable and handsome presents, and if they had been eailier apprised of the event they might have recognised and acknowledged nor valuable services still more handsomely. Social. — Tbe Presbyterian social came off this year at Drummond on the 6th in3t., and wa3 even more successful and more entertaining _ than u*ual. The B-ev. Mr Brown, minister of the congregation, who presided, gave in outline a statement of the financial and spiritual condition of tbe congregation, which showed that in al' .respects the last year had been even more encouraging than any of its predecessors. The Chaiiman and the Rev. Messrs A. Macdonalc? (Otautau) and X Ferguson (Invercargill) held the attention of their audience with instructive and racy addresses, which were highly appreciated. The choir rendered several musical items with much taste, and several quartets and dueta added much to the evening's entertainment. Miss Sutton played the accompaniments as organist. The young ladies of the congregation, who attended to the comestibles were most asiduous in their attentions, adding nmch to the evening's enjoyment. After the usual votes of thanks a most enjoyable social was brought to a close by the singing of a doxology and the benediction.
