MINING SUMMARY

.""Although the season, is, now very far ad--vanced the dredging^industry has during the .past -three 'weeks been in a* more flourishing condition than at any time this year, the returns won being large and the dividends declared numerous. During"' the w-eek ended September 25 the record yield for the present. *year -was obtained, the total reaching .over 26900z, while the totals for the other two weeks were both in, the^egion of 2000oz. At the present time, however, -although the river is below "the sft mark, the ' drift is extremely ■troublesome, and, as ,a result, some of the gorge .dredges have been compelled to close dewn.. As far as sluicing operations are concerned, the water supplies appear to have /been entirely sufficient, but still very few returns are to hand. The Blue Spur Consolidated Company's half-yearly wash-up resulted an a yield of 885oz. A Reefton telegram states that a party of Boatman's residents is reported to have 'struck a reef close to •the old Specimen Hill claim. The reef has been stripped for 100 ft, and carries good stone. - -An Auckland telegram states that during the 'three weeks ended September 12 the mines in the Auckland district yielded bullion valued at £81,439, a ''record for a three-weekly period ■in the history of the Auckland goldfields, being £3475 in excess of the previous best. A xeturn from the Crown mines shows a return of gold to the value of £6079, from 1966 tons of ore, as against £4524 in July.

During tha four weeks ended September 9 tho Waihi Gold > Mining Company -treated •24,178 tons of ore, for million valued at £57,180. This is a record for the mine for a four-toeekly period. The Koniata Reefs Gold Mining Company treated. 1350 tons of ore for bullion valued a*- £3500. A Thames telegram -etates that a proposal has been made to pnt in a low level "to connect with the shaft of the Thomes Hauraki, which property, together with a huge pumping plant, was recently bought by the Government for the protection of the mining industry. This would enable the mining companies to open up blocks at a deeper level than has hitherto been possible, and would have an important bearing upon the gold mining industry, and further the prospects of the clistrict^
