OAMARU NEWS NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OAMARU, October 1.

The annual parade of stallions was held on the show grounds on Saturday. . Tho entry was large (29- in all classes), and the attendance was slightly better than last ▼ear. The show of draughts consisted or 19, all in the pink of condition. Among the exhibits were Agitator, Cedric the Saxon, Sanely Erskine, Dalmuir Prince, The Sovereign, Pride's Fancy, Ranfurly Yet, Crowned King, and Montgomery. One thoroughbred, Rosemere, paraded; wJiile trotting and hackney stallions numbered nine, including- Black Knight and Mambrino King. One pony stallion also put in an appearance. In point of quality the parade was a capital one. though the number of draughts out for the first time was small.

The Oamaru Mail says that Mr J. D. Sievwrighfc was approached during- a stay here of a couple of days on the subject ol standing for Oamaru at the forthcoming election, but ho gave no definite answer. Mr Sieywright stood for Oamaru in the Opposition interest in 1896, but the Mail says he would not wear Mr Massey's colours again, and surmises that the matter of party would find him in a quandary, with no way out of :c.: c. • The contractor for the erection of the new wharf has made a start with his work, and has already driven two or three piles. A second shipment of the timber is expected to arrive in the course of a weeli or so, after which there should be no delay in the operations, and the .rharf should ba ready for shipping next spring. The experiments for the destruction of California thistle at Totara have not all been successful. In some of the plots there is, I am told, a healthy braird showing through. Other of the treatments have had more effect. A piece of land alongside, which has been cultivated for cron in the ordinary way is looking as free from tho weed as t»he best of the treated areas. The expense of the treatments is understood to be too great in almost all ra^g. for general use.
