DYNAMITING A MINE
A CHARTERS TOWERS SENSATION.
BRISBANE, October 2.
Charters Towers was startled yesterday i morning by a terrific explosion. It proved to be the work of a dynamitard in Queen's Cross mine, which was wrecked. A mill on the adjoining property was also seriously damaged. Portions of the machinery and debris Avere hurled a, hundred yards, whilst the people living in the neighbour- , hood w.era almost thrown from their beds j by the force of the explosion. I
Windows and crockery were broken in I all directions. Several narrow escapes are reported. The end of a cylinder smash.cc! through the wall of the house of Manager MacLaren and cut the piano in two, whilst the furniture in MaeLaren's and adjoining houses was destroyed. I The two watchmen, who w.ere sleeping in the mill, miraculously escaped with slight injuries. The mill had been cleaned up at midnight on Saturday, and as there was no amalgam on the premises the watchmen went to b.ed at 2. (
It is "believed the perpetrators were aware of this, as the explosion occurred a couple of hours later. Ife is suppos^ that they placed a oaF.e> of dynamite Between the high and low-pressure cylinders — the most vulnerable point.
The sound of the explosion was heard a distance of 17 miles, and people rushed from their beds in panic.
