SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.
The .ordinary meeting, held on Thursday, September 28, was attended by the Commissioner (Mr J. Hay), and Messrs J. MTLiean, A. Kinross, D. King, and J. Mintyre.
The Commissioner reported that it bad been discovered that at the ballot on Wednesday for sections in Forest Hill Hundred, -Mr Murdoch Watson had drawn two sections — 106 and 410^ — which did not adjoin, and therefore he was eli"-ib'e to hold the second dtawn by him, section 410, and a fresh: ballot shoma be held ror that area. — A *esn ballot was held, and R. W. Ross declared thcsuccessful applicant for section 410, block VII, Forest Hill Hundred. The -TJnder-secretary notified that Messrs Jno." Hay, Jno. M'lntyre, and A. Kinross had been appointed commissioners to classify and report upon pastoral runs in the Southland land district. — Received.
ißanger Campbell recommended that section 3, block X, -Oteramika Hundred, 14 acres, "formerly held by Messrs Carmichael, be -offered at auction for term of 14 years at upset of £3 12s per annum; also that section" 51, block VIU, Wyndham (eight and alialf acres), formerly held by James Spr-att. be similarly offered at auction for the same term at an upset of £3 per annum, "with right of cultivation. The. ranger also repotted that section 50, block VIII, Wyndham S.D. (one acre), .""formerly lield by Samuel Brown, was infested with ragwort, and was of Tittle value.— lt was decided that the three islands l» offered at auction, for term of 14 years, ■with right of cultivation, no valuation for improvements.
It was -resolved that section 5, block I, liillburn (less 10 acres to be selected by the Southland Education Board) be reserved permanently for a racecourse
It was decided that Mr ft. M'Kenzie be allowed 2s 6d per chain on fence on roadline on sections 39 and part 14, "VVaiau ,dis.trict.
It was decided that tbe lease of section 13i., block I, Aparima Hundred, be offered at auction for a term of seven years at upset of £1 per annum, burdened with valuation for improvements, £20. A. H. Grey asked to whom the valuation foi improvements on section 10, block 111, Alton, would be paid.— Ranger to take possession and report.
Goo. Young asked the board to rescind (cancellation of lease of section 10, block 111, lAlton. — Application declined.
It was decided tihat previous resolution lie rescinded re an area part section 1, block E, and reserve, Centre Hill, the 16s paid by Thos. Anderson to be refunded, and a grazing license over the four acres river license be granted to Alex. Smith at 16s per annum. The rent on grazing license" on sections 24 and 26, block VI, Chatton. held by James Harvey, was reduced to 5s ppr annum owing to coal lease being granted over part of Brea.
Mrs Catherine Forbes, holder of occupation lioense and residence area in block 11, Loaagvrood, under the Mining Act, asked protection and to obtain a lease in perpetuity over esune. — To be dealt with the same as other Bimilar tenants in Longwood district, rights to be protected. It was decided that Mr G-. Gutsell be •charged 3s per week from February 27 last for use of cottage on section 26, block 11, IWaikawa, and Is 6d per week be paid to "Wm. Blair on account of cottage, one month given to pay or he be ejected from the section.
Mrs Catherine Harri applied to withdraw fcections 40, 48, 50 to 51, block 111, Otera-
mlka Hundred, from her application for cash lahd. — Withdrawal allowed.
James Gilrrap applied for allotment la. Ringway settlement, and asked to be allowed to pay fox improvements in term of 21 years. — To be informed that the board could not accede io the request, but that if he could make arangements with the mortgagee for the payment of the valuation an application for term would be considered. J. W. Cox. lessee of section 101, Edendale settlement, complained of treatment of the officers of the Southland County Council in endeavouring to make him responsible for cost of removing gorse from a roadline that had been neglected for years past.— Copy of letter to be forwarded to the chairman of the County Council for his remarks and explanation.
The Wallace County Council wrote that it did not want the three pieces of land adjoining section 84. Taringatura S.D. for a gravel reserve. — Received.

F. C. Jarvis was offered flax on sections in block XI, Campbelltown, at £2, two months given to cut. It was decided to offeT lease of part section 12, block, Vlll, New River Hundred, at auction for a term of -Seven years at upset of £5. per annum. It was resolved that G-eo. Fife be allowed to occupy Pukekaoka Isla.nd, Stewart Island, during the pleasure of the board.
James Haldane 'was granted right to cut flax on' section 9, block VIII, Waikawa, at £10, six niontibs given to cut. It was* notified that tbe application of A. M. Carmichael for block VIII, Lillburn, unsniveved, containing 450 acres, and of A E.- Tapper for block XVIII, New River Hundred, had been granted by the Minister. — Received. ■>
The following applications were granted for the approval of the Minister:— P. L. Gilkison, part section 13, block I, Toe Toes (17 acres); H. Car&well, part section 13, block I, Toe Toes (4 acres) ; and! John Mainland, part section 13, block (45 acres). -jft was decided to recommend the application of W. J." Moffett for part "section 14, block' Xl, Waikawa, -for approval of the Minister.—The application of Albert Tall for 378 acres in block XIII, Oteramika, was granted subject to Jno. Walker's application for five acres. — E. Tall was granted 320 acres in block XIII, Oteraniika. — The applications were granted subject to' the reservations required by the warden. The survey plan of section 18, block TUT Waikawa, was approved, and rent fixed at fid per acre; of section* 1 to 5, block XXXVII, and 1 and 2, block XLI, Taringatura district (Hillend Bush reserve), and sections to be opened on the optional system at values fixed. The Lake County Council forwarded schedule of "thirds" and "fourths" for period from Ist May, 1905, to 31st July, 1905.— 1t was approved, and the receiver was authorised to pay the amount over.
A plan of sections 2, 3, 7, 15 to 18, block I, Alton district; sections 2] a, 22, 23, 24. 25. block III; and sections 1, 2, 3, 4 4a, and 5, block X, Alton district, was passed, and it was resolved that Messrs M'Tntyre and M'Lean inspect and report upon the land.
Mr D. King gave notice of motion as follows: — "''That at the next meeting of the board the resolution passed at the meetiag
' this day that the area applied for by G. R. Quae'e be sold at auction, be rescinded." The board then adjourned until October 26.
