CANTERBURY.
A meeting of the Ellesmere branch was held on the 22nd ull. Mr T. B. Howson (president) occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. The Chairman gave a brief resume of business done at the meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury branch on August 16. With regard to rural education the Chairman said that his opinion was thai book-keeping was a necessary item of education for the farmer's son. Regarding an application made by Mr C. H. Gilby to the executive, that the union should use its influence to endeavour to regain the railway concession to children attending private schools at Christchurch, the Chairman said he was thoroughly in sympathy with the motion which had been passed that the Government should be urged to reconsider its decision. The action of the executive regardinsr- concessions for pupils attending private schools was approved. The Chairman gave details of the trade deputation which attended the executive on September 20, regarding the Harvester Trust. The resolution proposed by Mr G. W. Leadley was approved by the branch. — The Secretary reported that the membership had increased from forty to ninety members. — The chairman was instructed to bring up the matter of flour mills as a remit at the next meting of the Colonial Conference, lo be held at Christchurch during Carnival Week.
