Stocks and Shares. — Banks: Australasia, £91 10s; New South Wales, £42 10s; Union, £47. The others are unchanged. Pig iron, 50s. Lead, £14 ss. At the tallow sa'es 1700 casks were offeree? anil 900 sold. Prices are unchanged. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,570,000 quarter?, and for the Continent 2,075,000 quarters. The Atlantic shipments are 51,000 quarters, and the Pacific shipments 3000 quarters. Wheat.— The visible supply is 25,842,000 bushels American. September 29. The Bank of England returns show the stock of gold coin and bullion to be £32,889,000 ; reserve, £23,800,000 ; proportion of reserve to liabilities 40.03. The notes in circulation total £29,270,000 ; public deposits, £14,203,000 ; other deposits, £45,169,000 ; Government securities, £18,667,000 ; other- securities, £35,297,000. Three months' bills are discounted at 3|- per cent. Consols are quoted a{ £89 7s 6d. The following are the quotations for colonial Government stocks compared with those ruling a week previous : —
Wheat : The markets are quiet, but steady. French was rather easier on the publication of the preliminary official estimate of the crop, which is 119,000 000 hectolitres. Cargoes are firm. Adelaide, off the coast, is held for 33s 3d ; afloat, 33s to 33s 9d. Flour: Slow, and nominally unchanged. Copper : Soot, £71 5s ; three months, £70 ss. Tin: Spot, £147; three months, £145 17s 6d. Lead, £14. Sugar (nominal) : First marks, lls lOd j German, 8s 9d. The Bradford wool market is firm and unchanged. There is, However, an improved inquiry. At the sheepskin auctions 4050 • bales were offered, and all sold. There was an average attendance and good competition. Clothing unchanged ; combings lower. Butter: Firm and unchanged. Secondaries are neglected. October 1. CoppaT: Spot, £71 2s 6d to £71 7s 6d; Uucp months, £70 2s 6d to £70 7s 6d. Lead, £14 2s 6d. Silver, 2s 4d per ounce. Tin plates, 12s 3d to 13s. Fencing wire, £6 10s. Iron bars, £6 7s 6d. Angle steel, £6 ss. Wire netting, 53 per cent, off list. Linseed oil, 19s. Rabbits: Firm.
